Oakley: from garage brand to Olympic sports
In 1975, the founder of Oakley, Jim Jannard, began selling his own brand of hyper-modern motorcycle grips from the boot of his car at motorsports events. He named his brand after his dog, an English Setter named Oakley. Jannard’s company was a one-man “garage brand” running on an initial investment of $300, and producing all Oakley products by hand in his garage-lab. However, what set Jannard apart was his extraordinary gift for innovation and an unshakable belief in thinking big. In consequence, Jannard settled for nothing but the best. His meticulously crafted motorcycle grips were made of a material he had invented (quite literally) in-house. He called this material Unobtainium®. Jannard’s invention had a unique property: it was hydrophilic, meaning that it improves your grip the more you sweat. Jannard would later use this material to coat the temple tips and nosepads of his Oakley eyewear.
It didn’t take long for Jannard to take up a new challenge and focus his revolutionary vision on eyewear design, starting with motorsports goggles. Jannard designed his first motorsports goggle, the O Frame® in 1980, followed in 1983 by the O Frame® Snow, Oakley’s first pair of snow goggles. The first collection of Oakley sunglasses came a year later, in 1984, when Jannard revealed the Oakley Eyeshades®. It was around this time that the high quality of Oakley eyewear began to garner a dedicated following among top athletes. In 1985, Oakley launched what was to be the brand’s biggest breakthrough yet: an incredibly popular and successful pair of fashion sunglasses called the Oakley Frogskins®. The Oakley Frogskins® rapidly became a classic within the Oakley assortment, and remains a best-selling model today.
The Oakley Frogskins® was an instant hit, and Oakley rapidly developed into a world-famous brand. Both within and outside of the world of professional sports, Oakley sunglasses became absolute must-haves. The influence of the Frogskins® collection is so extraordinarily far-reaching that the designs and brands that inspired Jim Jannard in the early 1980s now look to Oakley to set the latest trends. Just look at all the bright colour combinations and mirror lenses you see within virtually every brand’s assortment these days.
Oakley: innovation in lens technology
A pair of sunglasses that would be suited to athletic performance and Olympic sports was an unimaginable concept back then. Sunglasses weren’t made for that sort of thing. After all, to enhance an athlete’s performance rather than be a hindrance, sunglasses would have to meet much higher standards than anything the market had to offer at the time: better grip, broader and sharper peripheral vision, and shockproof lenses that would effectively filter UV while also providing protection in case of accidents. However, Jannard’s earlier inventions already possessed these properties: Unobtainium® for enhanced grip, and strong lenses with the perfect curvature that gave the Oakley O Frame® its maximized peripheral vision. All Jannard had to do was to find a way to synthesize them all into a single design: the Oakley Eyeshades®.
Since then, Oakley has added many more patents to their substantial portfolio. Another technological innovation, for instance, are Oakley’s Plutonite® lenses. Plutonite® is the lens material used for almost all Oakley sunglasses. It’s incredibly strong, resilient, and shatterproof. Oakley lenses are tested using all kinds of extreme experiments, such as shooting a metal bullet right into the centre of the lens at speeds of over 100 mph. Or dashing a metal spike, over one pound in weight, point-first onto the lens. These stringent ANSI impact tests are also used to assess the strength of industrial safety goggles.
Other lenses don’t just break during these tests, they shatter with explosive force, violently blasting sharp splinters in all directions. However, Oakley’s Plutonite® and Lexan™ lenses block these objects without breaking. Throughout all of these extreme tests Oakley’s astonishingly strong lenses always remain intact. All that, while offering 100% protection against UV-A, UV-B and UV-C rays and harmful blue light (HEV). In other words, Oakley sunglasses are far more than just a fashion accessory!
In addition, Oakley lenses come complete with High Definition Optics® technology, and XYZ Optics® for enhanced peripheral vision. Normal standard optics lenses slightly warp your vision. They unintentionally enlarge objects, throwing off your sense of perspective. Oakley recognizes that perception is essential when it comes to sports performance. Oakley’s HDO® lenses provide perfect visual clarity and natural depth perception, all the way up to the very edges of the lens.
Grant your eyes unsurpassed protection so that you can work toward your best accomplishments without worry. For quality, style, and performance Oakley is your brand of choice.
