Carrera was founded in Austria in 1956 by Wilhelm Anger. Anger named his company after the Carrera Panamericana, a six-day auto rally intended to celebrate the completion of the Pan-American highway. The Carrera Panamericana was famous among contemporaries as the most dangerous race in the world. It’s no surprise that Carrera sunglasses are most often tough, sporty, and thrilling. Many Carrera designs have a touch of 80s retro-appeal as a reference to the revival of the Carrera Panamericana at the end of the 80s.
One of William Anger’s most important and revolutionary innovations was the invention of Optyl. Optyl is a heat-hardened synthetic material that is incredibly strong, but 20% lighter than acetate. Most luxury brands use premium acetate to create the frames of their sunglasses. When you try on a Carrera model made of patented Optyl, you’ll feel the difference in weight and comfort right away! Optyl is also hypoallergenic.
Carrera sunglasses can be divided into four separate collections. The Carrera Icons collection is a beautiful series of vintage sunglasses inspired by the Carrera archive in Calalzo di Cadore, Italy. This iconic range is made of innovative materials for a modern feel to complement their sleek retro look.
The Carrera Muses collection combines the classic look of the Icons series with the latest fashion trends. The Muses series is lively, cool, and chic. The Carrera Craze collection takes this trend one step further with vibrant colours and youthful, seasonal designs.
Carrera Active is the Carrera sports collection. These models mostly come with polarized lenses, strong piston spring hinges, and are designed for outdoor action.
Most popular Carrera designs
In 2007, Carrera launched the Carrera Champion model, followed in 2008 by the slightly more angular Carrera Safari. These designs quickly became the bestsellers of the Carrera range. Each design has a number of beautiful editions in a variety of materials including Optyl, metal, and rubberized plastic. In 2012, Carrera released another bestseller: the highly popular Carrera 6000 series.
Aside from luxury sunglasses, Carrera also produces other sports accessories such as sports sunglasses, helmets, and snow goggles. Carrera also sponsors sports events on a regular basis, including Formula 1 racing, the America’s Cup sailing race, and the Winter Olympics. In addition, Carrera also sponsors individual athletes and sports teams in, amongst other fields, motorsports and cycling.
